Liberated by the Gospel

The gospel is simple...yet so misunderstood. The gospel message is so powerful...yet so often we are blind to this reality. Why? Perhaps because we overlook the reality that conflict is inherent to the gospel message.

A Disappointment...or Deceived?

It is not uncommon for people to feel as if they are a disappointment to God. Some may feel as though they are currently letting God down. Yet is this accurate? God's Word clearly shows His people what we are to be...yet we must never lose sight of His grace. God has always acted first - grace; we are called to respond to it - faith.

Think of it this way, if you are a parent, do you want your children feeling as if they are a disappointment to you?

With Him...

Nothing is more important than time spent with Jesus. After all, He came to be with us. Since this is true, a natural question is, "Are you with Him?"

Jesus selected 12 people in order to reform the people of God (Israel). God used these men to turn the world upside down. Do we believe that? Can that happen today? Do we want that to happen today?

Amazed by Commitment

Did you know you were made to make commitments? Why is that? What if I am not committed? Another good question; "To what should I be committed?"

The opening line of sermon is not on this audio, but here it is in print; "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important." - CS Lewis

Intervention via Incarnation

To Feast... or Fast?

Some things are simple. Quite often, though not all the time, simple things are difficult to do. Some times, if we are honest, we avoid the simple because we would rather not do it (or them).

The text today is simple. It focuses on Jesus' identity and the implications of it. One implication is we are to fast. Simple - yes. Difficult - ??

Labels - People

The title above should read "Labels" (with a line struck through it) - "People" (yet I am unable to do that on this part of the website...)

Why titled that way? Labels are ugly... I am certain we have all suffered from being labeled in the past. Sadly, many of us have likely labeled someone else...maybe even ourselves.

How about a new label?

Take Up...

Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, never ceases to amaze...even after all the years that have passed since His time of physically being on earth. People were "amazed" at the end of today's passage (Mk2:1-12)...a passage which really contains a mini-version of the gospel.

Touch...

A leper + a Savior = life change...

A model of faith + a model of works = situations change...

This is perhaps one of the most emotionally charged encounters of Jesus recorded in the gospels - if we have ears to hear... Are you in need of His healing touch?

“The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that’s the essence of inhumanity.” - George Bernard Shaw

Not To Be Served

Today we put into action some of Jesus' words in the gospel of Mark, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." (Mk10:45).

After worshiping at the church building for a while we took our worship to the city of Emporia - in service.

Priorities.

Jesus has a long day of showing the power of the Kingdom of God. What does He do?

People are flocking to see Jesus out in the wilderness, which is not insignificant for Jewish people (cf. Mt24:26). What does He do?

Conflict...

It is futile to deny the reality that conflict is all around us (e.g., circumstances point to the obvious existence of it despite statements to the contrary). Similarly, it is unwise to think we can escape from the conflict all around us (e.g., as followers of Jesus we will, by default, be caught in the middle of it whether we want to be or not).

The continual establishment of God's Kingdom inevitably leads to conflict. While this may be unsettling, what truly matters is the authority of Jesus - which is clearly on display in Mark 1:21-34.

It's Bigger Than You...

Whenever we read in the Bible, whether we realize it or not, we are reading about something much bigger than us. God's story of redemption is the most magnificent story ever told. But please understand, when I say story I do not mean a fanciful tale or anything like that. It is indeed fanciful, but in the majestic sense.

Yes, God's story is grand. Yet what is mind blowing is how He wants you to play a part in it. He wants You to realize that while He loves you...His story is bigger than you. This reality is not to show you as insignificant, but to draw you into something that will give your life meaning and purpose.

When we start to grasp these things we will have a longing for community. This is a good thing because isolation will weaken and ultimately destroy you.

BEHOLD!!!

Our picture of the future shapes what it is we do...

What do people think about heaven? When was the last time you thought about it? We do ourselves a great disservice and insult God if we do not spend time contemplating heaven. We also disregard God if we do not allow the reality of heaven to change our daily lives...

[NOTE - this is far from anything close to exhaustive on heaven, but we need to at least start somewhere...]
