It is OK to Trust

Like it or not, we are all born with the need to trust. Children are a wonderful example of this; they are so trusting of their parents. Adults have a need to trust as well...yet many times we struggle with issues of trust. Some may question why they should trust God. This is a legitimate question Christians should not ignore. Yet a legitimate question to be asked of that question is, "What happens if a person does not trust God?"

Oh to Be a Kid Again...

Do we take God at His Word? It is certainly easier said than done. For some, or a variety of, reasons we all find ourselves struggling with our ability to trust God at one point or another. What can we learn about the need to trust from the perspective of a child?

What Do We Know About God?

We have all been guilty of living as if God does not exist (either in our past...or perhaps even currently). Undoubtedly there are a variety of reasons for this. Many people blatantly choose to live as if God does not exist. Undoubtedly there are a variety of reasons for this as well. I wonder, can a more accurate view of God help both those who blatantly reject Him and those who struggle with living as if He does not exist? While we cannot know Him exhaustively (if we think we can we have just reduced Him to an idol), we can know Him.

Whose Is It Anyway?

We can learn much by observing what takes place in the world...interestingly much of it matches up with Scripture once we probe below the surface (of both the world and the Bible). Unfortunately some people will point to the recent devastation in Haiti as an example of how God does not exist… Yet in reality the devastation in Haiti has given many examples of how God not only exists, but how humanity bears His image. In light of that, how do God’s “image bearers” handle their finances…or do their finances handle them?

Why Remember?

Many of us are forgetful. We forget to pick up an item at the store, whose turn it is to pick up the kids, the phone message we failed to write down because - "Oh I'll just remember it"... (Need I give more examples?). Yet in the big picture, those are trivial. This sermon kicks off a series which, right now, is headed only God knows where. Yet just to get you thinking...Christmas was celebrated about half a month ago now. How many of us have sat and pondered the implications of that day for our lives? Do we realize the “Christ Event” has the power to shape our present and chart a course for our future? Or have we returned to the routine of our daily lives having already “forgotten” what took place nearly 2,000 years ago now?

Blood of Innocents

The events around the birth of Jesus (and his young childhood) were anything but silent. In fact, hardly anything about Jesus' life was calm and tranquil. I am certain you will enjoy listening to the perspective of a grieving parent who lost a child due to the birth of the "King of Peace."

We Study Because We Want to Be...Left Behind

[This is part two of a sermon which began on 11/22] If we are honest with ourselves, there are a lot of things in the Bible from which we shy away. Sadly talking about the return of Jesus is one of those areas. I suppose this happens because there is so much confusion about it (i.e., differing views). Therefore, quite often the return of Jesus is left to the realm of opinion. After all, “We can’t know all the details…” This is very true. Yet not being able to know all the details is not the same as saying we can know nothing…nor does it rule out the need to discern what we hear and discard what is not biblical. Passages should not be forced to say what they could not have meant.

We Study Because We Want to Be...

[This is really part one...part two will take place, Lord willing, on 12/6] Why are some passages in the Bible a point of so much controversy and disagreement? Could it be because we focus on the wrong things? It is humbling to see how, far too often, we focus on the wrong things in life - albeit with good intentions. It is also humbling to see how much "baggage" we can bring to the biblical text. Is there a solution? Are we to merely agree to disagree?

We Study to Remain Faithful

As children begin to grow up, parents have many questions. The most important question ought to be - "Will they remain faithful?" In 1 Thessalonians it is clear to see "this church" was a great one...yet Paul was still concerned that they remain faithful. Why? Because, "It is for the faith and the faithfulness of others that we exist as the Body of Christ." (quote by Shawn Lindsay of Ozark Christian College - guest preacher this morning; Ozark is a mission New Life supports regularly).
