- Series: Shaped By Worship
When we look at the Bible and Church History there is no denying the early celebration of the Lord’s Supper was quite different than Its modern observance in many Christian circles. Initially it was a part of a meal…over the course of time it became separated from an actual meal…over the course of more time it became something many do by themselves while pondering how sinful they have been…
This quote by John Mark Hicks puts it quite nicely: “…our practice of the supper as a silent, solemn, individualistic eating of bread and drinking of wine is radically dissimilar from the joyous communal meal that united Christians in first century house churches.”
The Lord’s Supper is much too broad for one sermon, so not all facets of it are covered in this sermon. In part that is why a whole series (The Mystery Meal) was done on it earlier. Yet the reality is the Lord’s Supper is much too broad for a sermon series. Plus the reality is I do not know everything about it anyway. It is a mystery…
This sermon is a bit different. There will be times of virtual silence on the audio. I encourage you to take those times and reflect on (in community is best) what those at the New Life Church Building today were encouraged to reflect on and talk about in community.
I will likely blog more on the Lord's Supper in the near future at www.heyblogwithbrent.blogspot.com
