Worship Services

Worship is a lifestyle, not merely what happens on Sunday mornings.  Yet by default we often think of Sunday morning when someone says worship.  However, this is not to say Sunday morning worship is devalued at New Life.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 reads, “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”

Those are amazing words from someone living in a tumultuous time.  Yet they also use language that is foreign to us (I don’t have a fig tree, nor a vineyard in my backyard).  So how about this, “Though the Starbucks is closed and there are no lattes to be had, though my cell phone has failed and does not have signal strength, though the church service didn’t meet my exact needs and I left feeling overlooked, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”  Worship is not something that automatically happens – it is a choice (a discipline), which also means it is something we can get better at.

We understand it is sometimes nice to “sleep in” on the weekend, but what does that say about our commitment to love God if it leads to missing worship services which are focused on Him?  Furthermore, we need the encouragement that comes from being with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The focus of our Sunday morning worship services is worshipping God.  We do this in a variety of ways, the most obvious of which are a contemporary song service, a sermon from the Bible, and celebrating the Lord’s Supper.
